Women's league says throwing women into pigsty is the worst form of GBV after gruesome discovery
The ANC Women's League (ANCWL) has expressed outrage at the brutal murders of two women in Limpopo, calling the incident "the worst form of gender-based violence."
The victims, a 45-year-old South African woman and a 35-year-old foreign national, were allegedly shot and thrown into a pigsty on a farm in Sebayeng, outside Mankweng. The alleged perpetrators, farmer Zachariah Olivier (60) and his two employees, Adriaan de Wet (19) and William Musoro (45), have been arrested and are facing multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
"We cannot begin to comprehend the pain and suffering that the families are enduring," said the ANCWL in a statement. "This incident underscores the urgent need for decisive action to curb violence against women and to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous acts are brought to justice swiftly and without leniency."
The league emphasized the need to address the deep-rooted misogyny that fuels violence against women. "The brutal nature of these murders is indicative of the deep-rooted misogyny that continues to endanger the lives of women across the country," said the ANCWL. "We cannot, and will not, accept a society where the lives of women are treated with such disregard."
The ANCWL also called on Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, to take action to prevent farm owners from operating outside the law and creating "no-go zones" on their properties.
"Our bill of rights cannot be undermined in this manner, especially as we celebrate 30 years of our hard-earned freedom. Women's rights are human rights, and we will not allow them to be violated with impunity," the league stated.
