Bambo Sibiya embarks on a restorative journey titled "Ngemva Kokuqubuka – After Precarity." which celebrates black femme subjects

Renowned South African artist Bambo Sibiya unveils a powerful body of work in his solo exhibition at the Circa Gallery in Johannesburg, titled "Ngemva Kokuqubuka – After Precarity." Running from June 1 to July 27, 2024, this exhibition marks Sibiya's first South African show in seven years.

"I do not want my identity to be lost in the global art world," declares Sibiya. "My roots are here, and I'm thrilled to contribute to the re-telling of history as a voice from the global south."

Sibiya's vibrant works explore the subcultures of music, dance, and fashion, delving into the complexities of black identity. His subjects radiate beauty, dignity, and strength, their meticulously styled hair and makeup serving as symbols of pride and self-expression.

"This series goes beyond the representation of black and femme subjects," Sibiya explains. "I am creating a restorative and redemptive world, one where our identities are celebrated and our narratives are told with agency."

Sibiya's use of geometric forms and swirling abstractions balances chaos and order, creating a precarious visual equilibrium that reflects the complexities of contemporary South African society. "My work is a testament to the resilience and creativity of our people," he reflects.

"Ngemva Kokuqubuka – After Precarity" offers a refreshing counterpoint to dominant media narratives, presenting a vision of a more equitable and empowering future. As Sibiya asserts, "It is time to celebrate the richness and diversity of our own experiences and to rewrite the stories that have been told about us."
