Small deeds by #CPUT student amp up huge differences in young school girls lives

An old adage states – its not how much you have that matters. Its what you have that does.

A big heart can make a huge difference in other people’s lives.

A Cape Town university student is living true to that notion by assisting at least 12 young school girls just being good to them. Call it the big sister rescue act.

The deed started when she saw a little girl walking to school wearing a dishevelled uniform.

“As i was waiting for her to come closer i noticed that she wasn’t well dressed. Her shirt wasn’t on properly, her skirt wasn’t ironed and her shoes were torn,” said 20 year old Olwethu Maqungo who is a third year student at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

On approaching Maqungo, the little girl disclosed that she was afraid of going to school because her books were not covered and she did not have stationary.

Rewind to your school days: we all know what that means – an angry teacher.

“It was disheartening. I fixed her uniform, put her on my back and walked her to school. It turned out the little girl lives with her grandmother, and her grandmother is not well.

“So i went and helped to cover her books and got all the things on her stationary list. Then before going to campus i went and bathed her and her granny and i took them to the Athlone Sassa office, as their grant money wasn’t coming in, to sort that out,” said Maqungo.

Doesn’t that just sprinkle tears?

Wait for this..... she has not stopped with helping one family. She assists 11 others with school uniforms and stationary.

Where does she get the money to do all this when she is still just a student herself? She uses her own pocket money!

“ I want to encourage my community to help one another. I feel we should help each other. Take 30 minutes each week to do something to encourage a needy person,” she said.

One tourist I interviewed a while back told me that South Africa has the most inspiring people in the world. Gugu isn’t just a hero in her community. She is a valuable African asset.

She always welcomes donations of necessities like toilet paper, used school clothes, stationery and basic donations.

She can be contacted on WhatsApp number 084 391 5869. Lets support her in her endeavour of helping the future leaders get a decent education.
